I've said it before and I'll say it again. One of the most effective ways at resolving this is to have the spouse put on the other shoe...or pump.
It would be interesting to find out how he would feel if his wife were, unbeknownst to him, having contact with someone she was intimate with, making the same types of statements, and refusing to understand his discomfort. You let the husband read where she is telling him how wonderful he was and how much more amazing she is sure he is today.
One of our biggest problems is the lack of empathy and our unwillingness to see situations through another's eyes.
