Western civilization had a state church for over a thousand years and it went very very badly. Ask the over 85 million people who were executed for various offenses against the church during that period. Offenses ranged from private sexual behaviors between adults to blasphemy, sedition, and heresy.

Frankly, I look down through history and find the separation of church and state a beautiful thing. State power has ALWAYS corrupted the church. I can't find an instance when it didn't.
