I believe I have a scriptural basis for this conviction. Maybe it will change when I become a Dad, but I doubt it. If I have to lay down my life for my child or for my wife, I will choose my wife, every time.

Do you honestly think your wife would ever forgive you if you chose her life over your kids?
It is part of the nature of parents to give up their own lives for their children -Yes, just as Jesus did for us.
Now I WILL agree with you in the case of a bad pregnancy where either it is the mothers life or the life of the baby. Such cases are VERY rare in America today though, and they also tend to happen in the first trimester (although they
can happen anytime).
